The biggest news coming from BMD for cameras update 6.1 looks to be a significant improvement on audio recording when using the built-in microphones on the BMPCC4K. The update will drastically lower the noise floor for quieter recordings using better analysis of incoming audio from the dual microphones.

Auto-focus will also be updated to respond quicker and more accurately as well as media formatting updates to decrease accidental card formatting issues. (You’ll now need to tap and hold the media format confirmation button for three seconds before a card will reformat and erase itself.)

“The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is an incredible success and it’s been very exciting watching the adoption of digital film workflows by a much wider range of people. This update is exciting because it adds even more great new features to the camera and it’s an exciting way for us to say thank you to all the people who have purchased a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and who have taken the time to discuss ideas for the future with us. We can’t wait to see what customers will produce next!” - Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design.

The Blackmagic Cameras 6.1 update will also include new in-camera calibration for users to recalibrate pixels in the camera as some pixels, over time, can change brightness and create variations across the sensor. 2:1 monitor framing guides will also be added for more creative composition tools for framing.

And, for those concerned about the BMPCC4K’s internal power issues, the new update should enhance efficiency and savings to improve battery runtime by 10-15% with more accurate real-time remaining battery power levels displayed.

Here is the full list of improvements for upgrade 6.1:

  • Adds support for pixel calibration in camera.

  • Improves autofocus performance.

  • Improves signal to noise ratio performance of the camera’s internal microphone.

  • Improves power efficiency for improved battery life.
