Well, it’s finally official. Canon has unveiled its follow up to its mixed-results Canon EOS R with the new, smaller, cheaper mirrorless camera - the Canon EOS RP.

We’ve been following this camera closely as it represents Canon’s doubling down on its mirrorless EOS R system and pushing 4K at a price point that is much more competitive than its last edition.

The Canon EOS RP

But, how will the market respond? As reported earlier, the price for the EOS RP is a stunningly low $1,299 for the body only. The question is, did Canon do enough for filmmakers and video professionals to care? Or have they already lost the battle with Sony, Panasonic and Blackmagic (plus any of the other quality brands in the space).

What Do You Think?

Many of the concerns filmmakers and videographers expressed with the Canon EOS R don’t look to be addressed directly (for example, there is still only one SD card slot), but that shouldn’t be much of a surprise as this is a lower prosumer model than the EOS R. (A rumored 8K EOS R would be the one to make those big updates.)

But will the low price point be enough to get more price-conscious consumers interested in giving the new EOS RP a shot which might have been spent saving up for a better option, or going with a similar offering from the competition?
