Who doesn’t love some good camera gossip? Camera rumors come and go throughout the year, but have been heating up recently with NAB and Photokina both around the corner.

In addition to rumors of a Canon C300 capable of 8K (read the full story here), as well as a less-substantive dream build-out for a Panasonic L-Mount Cinema Camera (read here), Canon Watch has information about a new “high resolution Canon EOS R” possibly being announced here early in 2019.

Bonus Camera Rumors: Sony is reportedly set to announce new sensors of its own which can offer 8K video at 60 fps (read the full story here).

A High Resolution Canon EOS R

While Canon’s initial EOS R release has not enjoyed the best fanfare on its release (here’s one sample of how it stacks up with other digital mirrorless cameras at its price range). Canon appears to be set on making a run on the market and doubling down on mirrorless (even rumoredly ditching the EOS 5Ds to do so).

What we do know from reports is that this new high resolution Canon EOS R should have a sensor around 50 MP (down from earlier reports of Canon pushing for 75 MP). And that this new high resolution EOS R could be "announced during Q1 2019, before Photokina 2019" (via Canon Watch.)

Canon EOS R Rumor

For those interested, the Canon EOS R is still alive though. The biggest indicator of the camera’s ultimate success or failure may be decided throughout this holiday market and heading into 2019. If the camera sells and has enough life to get some much needed firmware updates (or a stronger mk II), it might end up alright. Or, it might get lost in the tussle with the strong offerings from Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and Blackmagic.

Here are the current Canon EOS R specs:

  • 30.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor

  • UHD 4K30 Video

  • C-Log & 10-Bit HDMI Out

  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor

  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF

  • 3.15" 2.1m-Dot Swivel Touchscreen LCD

  • SD UHS-II Card Slot

  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

  • Price: $2,299.00
