Preview: External Power Solution for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

As much as we love what we’re seeing from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K here at No Film School, like most interested parties, we’ve been keeping our eyes out for some external power solutions for the ol’ BMPCC4K.

For many shooters, it was big news when Tilta announced its first modular camera cage for the BMPCC4K. While the camera is a great offering (especially with how it stacks up with other mirrorless cameras near its price point), concerns about its internal battery life have been one of the few, but biggest, qualms about it.

So, let’s take a look a preview look at this upcoming Hawk-Woods external powering option for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.

The BMPCC 4K Canon LP-E6 Batteries

As powerful as the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is, it does appear that the designers had to make some sacrifices. Working natively with Canon LP-E6 batteries is one of those sacrifices. At best you’re looking at one hour of regular shooting with each battery. Which is exactly why adapters like the ones below are highly considerable.

Hawk-Woods DV-BM4 Battery Plate

The first mount option (and smaller of the two) is the Hawk-Woods DV-BM4 which allows for use of Sony NP-F style batteries on the BMPCC 4K. This DV-BM4 mount connects ontop of the camera (or on your camera cage) via a 1/4-20” thread. It has a 12V regulator built-in to deliver 12V through the DC connection. Hawk-Woods LR-12 Dummy Battery

The other option previewed by Hawk-Woods is the LR-12 for larger V-mount or Gold-mount batteries. The LR-12 uses a dummy LP-E6 battery with a 12V regulator through a D-Tap connection to deliver 8.4V by way of the LP-E6 dummy battery.
