If the internet has taught us anything, it’s that you should never trust it to help you name things. Yet, here we are once again and Yongnuo - the Chinese camera and gear manufacturer - has opened up the naming of its new “Android-based” mirrorless camera to the general public.

While we have some suggestions of our own here at No Film School, like “Camera McCameraFace” and “The Yongnuo Mirror-YES” we also have some details about this odd new addition to the mirrorless marketplace.

The Yongnuo YN450

Yongnuo YN450 Mirrorless Camera

Information about the Yongnuo YN450 is still coming out by the day, but as early images and reports would suggest, the Yongnuo YN450 will be a skinny smartphone-sized camera with at least a Yongnuo YN 14mm f/2.8 lens attached (probably through an adapter) on its TBA lens mount system. The touchscreen display looks nice, and reports of 4K/30fps video recording combined with its 4G data network and WiFi connectivity is intriguing. Here are the full stats so far:

  • 5-inch 1080p INCEL touchscreen display

  • 4K at 30fps

  • RAW Support

  • 3GB RAM

  • 32GB Onboard Storage

  • Memory Card Slot

  • 400mAh Battery

  • Headphone Jack

  • Built-in GPS

  • Dual LED Flash

  • 4G/3G Data Network

  • WiFi Connectivity

  • Price: TBA

An Android-Based Mirrorless Camera

The real uniqueness of Yongnuo’s offering though, is its tag as an “Android-Based” mirrorless camera. The Yongnuo YN450 could be an early indicator in just how quickly the market is moving towards fully connected smartphone cameras that can operate at a high prosumer level, yet still fit into your pocket and upload footage and photos from anywhere.

The Yongnuo YN450 features 4G connectivity and runs on Android’s operating system. This promises that the Yongnuo YN450 will allow users to easily share photos and videos online and through social channels directly.

Rock the Vote!

Yongnuo Camera Contest

Now for the fun part. In a Facebook post, Yongnuo has opened voting on its website for the new camera’s naming. However, in an apparent attempt to sabotage any collective online fun, they’ve requested that the voting be focused on one of their two options:

  • A) 4G Camera

  • B) Smart Camera

Yet, despite their best efforts, there is still room for write-ins. Yongnuo does ask that the write-in votes are “in line with industry characteristics,” “concise, normative and without any unfamiliar and difficult words” and “does not contain any unhealthy information” etc...

If some lucky contributor does come up with a solid final name (or at least votes, I believe) they could win aYN50mm F1.8C/N YONGNUO lens. The contest is open now with winners set to be announced in January 2019.
