On the heels of Sony announcing its highly-anticipated a7S III, Atomos has confirmed its Ninja V recorder will be able to record 12-bit RAW images directly from the full-frame mirrorless camera. 

The a7S III made waves earlier this week as Sony's latest 4K camera that packs-in larger photosites onto a 12.1MP Exmor R sensor. Though the camera cannot record RAW internally, Atomos has partnered with Sony to allow its 16-bit linear RAW output to be converted into a 12-bit RAW and recorded as Apple ProRes RAW on the Ninja V.

Resolutions and frame rates up to 4K 60p will be supported, and on top of that, you will be able to simultaneously record external RAW on the Ninja V and compressed video directly on the a7S III. The advantages of RAW workflows are well documented as it gives you access to all the image data from the sensor. It's ideal to use for finishing in HDR, reducing noise, recover scenes shot in low light, or even fine tuning Rec. 709. If your budget and workflow allows for it, give RAW shot, or at least a Log gamma curve if available on the camera. 

Additoinally, because the a7S III has an output of 10-bit 4:2:2 on a full HDMI connector, the Ninja V, as well as other Atomos recorders, can record the signal in either ProRes or DNx codecs when RAW is unnecessary. It's important to point out, however, that the Ninja V will be the only Atomos recorder to record RAW. When asked if other Atomos recorders will receive RAW capabilities, like the Shogun, Atomos CEO Jeromy Young said it's in the pipeline but gave not exact details to win.

The looming question when it comes to Atomos is when will it be available? Atomos has confirmed the software will arrive in September. So cross your fingers Sony shooters, RAW is on its way.
