No, 'Back To the Future' Doesn't Have a Giant Plot Hole

Last week, one of the biggest trends on social media was picking 5 films you thought were perfect. Many people responded with Back to the Future, but writer and director James Gunn pointed out that while he thought the movie was still perfect, there was a big plot hole. 

Many people responded by agreeing with Gunn. 

But they all were wrong. 

Screenwriter of Back to the Future, Bob Gale, came in to sound off. 

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gale said, “Bear in mind that George and Lorraine only knew Marty/Calvin for 8 days when they were 17, and they did not even see him every one of those 8 days," explained Gale. “So, many years later, they still might remember that interesting kid who got them together on their first date.”

To me, that's a mic drop moment. 

And other screenwriters chimed in as well. 

Gale continued to say, "If you had no photo reference, after 25 years, you’d probably have just a hazy recollection," said Gale. He concluded by stating that even if George and Lorraine noticed some resemblance between Calvin and their teenaged son, they would probably chalk it up to coincidence. “It wouldn’t be a big deal,” he confirmed.

For me, that ends the debate. 

That, and the fact that they saw Marty grow up and at some point, his face would be ingrained in their memory as their son, probably not some drifter they saw for a few hours all those years ago.
