How would you go about shooting this?

So we're shooting a music video and in that video the subject is being sucked into the sand and eventually disappears.

Our initial thought:
Bury him up to his neck and pull him out by his arms. Then reverse it in post and cut away to a forward shot of his hands on the ground and him being pulled backwards out of shot to hid the reverse a little. then back to the flat ground where he was for suggestive imagery.

My question(s): will this method work and/or look good? Is there a better way you'd shoot it?

I will update with test footage of our first attempt at this shot later this week.

We did a shot like this once. We used one of those rubbery thick "fake lawns" and hung it between two saw horses. Then we cut a cross shape in the center that would accommodate the torso of the actor. Then we poured sand over the grass so it looked like he was submerged in grass. (there was quite a bit of spillage so throw a tarp down). The first time we did it, we didn't have near enough sand, and the grass would eventually show through as he "sank" into the sand.
