Is NFS losing steam?

I've been going on this website for about 5 years now and I feel like it's not the same. I don't find being on this site as much as it use to be. I feel like I've been to DPR more often instead of here. I like the community here but it feels like it's dying.

I am just posting this to see if these feelings are mutual with anyone else.

I think it has a lot to do with all the BS ads and crap on the forums, that is the main reason I stopped coming as much.

This post comes up alot the last 5 years. I also noticed nab posts were pretty slow, engadget had that well before.
Now I will say theres not alot of self makers who write often and stay with the publication long. Alot of people give V Renee alot of shit because its alot of articles on youtube videos, some videos alittle old. But Ive found new things to sub to because of her.
Also I think the community is at critical mass or close. Its more accessible than ever to be a content creator, its both debilitating and inspiring at the same time. NFS is a reflection of that. I think the case study series of posts were strong. Koo still has the ability to articulate the whats and hows of getting films made and through to distribution with the same type of writing that locked me in years ago. Other than that its alot of repost and repackage. Hard not to be.

Now I mostly go to read these forum posts, because I found that I had stopped looking as much at the articles. This is mainly because of the posts like those from V Renee, I do wish NFS would get the hint, but they seem to be set on a track of getting clicks for ad revenue. If you're new to filmmaking and you're lazy about locating good content, then maybe V Renee is what you're looking for, but that should be a different website, not NFS. As you can tell by my post, until you asked this question I was never inclined to comment.

Do you guys think there is something we can do as a community to make things less dull around here?

This website caught my attention. I plan to read some articles. I already read some posts in the forum.

I'm new and I have lots to learn.

Hey guys, Thanks for sharing your thoughts and being part of the community. We actually have more original content on the site than ever. Just in the past couple months, we posted over 100 videos of new tech and gear from the NAB showroom floor, three new podcasts each week, and dozens of filmmaker interviews from SXSW and Tribeca. That being said, we of course value the opinions of those of you who have been around and new community members, too! We have been working to cut down on board spam that unfortunately comes with the territory of a well-trafficked site, but are very open to your suggestions for improvement of the content and the boards. Please share your constructive advice! What would you like to see more or less of?

Thanks for asking Liz.
My constructive advice, my apologies if it seems a bit curt.
Less of V Renee posts.
More posts like those when Koo was writing about 6 or so years ago.

I don't mind the articles. I can easily just scan through and read what I want. Sometimes I find something good.

The miss for me is the Boards. I can't subscribe or be notified of responses. It lacks the bare minimum to encourage community. I've reached out on social media and through their contact, but no response.

I found the facebook group Frugal Filmmakers to be a much more active (maybe too much so) source of information.

Liz and the team are killing it with the podcast, it's one of the podcast I listen to weekly. And Liz writes some damn good articles. Kudos to her! I miss the interactions on the discussion boards, but after all the "junk/clickbait" that was listed as discussions topics, I understand why people no longer visit, click on, and/or contribute to them. And yes, less of VRenee post. Her post just seems like a copy and paste post from youtube videos, and the written portion of those post don't really have any real substance. I'm sure she's a good writer, I just wish she'd be more original with what she writes, and not post back to back to back. Overall, I still visit the site on a regular basis.

I find V Renee's reposts of YouTube videos very useful and the well-written summaries save me time. However, when that type of post becomes the main source of content for NFS, then we have a problem. I value readers' board posts but in recent years not only has the number of posts dwindled but the "quality" too. What has happened to the industry veterans who used to comment?

Thanks, guys, this is all very helpful. We agree that the boards need a functionality upgrade but of course every big technical change is easier said than done. I promise you we're paying attention to these requests, even if it takes a while to act on them for various reasons.

BTW, for those of you missing Ryan, be sure to check out our First Feature podcast, where every episode he is walking you through a different aspect of production on his film AMATEUR: https://nofilmschool.com/tags/firstfeature
