Researching a tough topic - how do you go about it?

I've gotten an idea recently to make a film dealing with a very serious topic, interlocking psychology, culture and storytelling. Obviously I can't expect of you to help me research that topic itself, that's why I didn't even mention what it is but the question I'd like to ask you is this: how do you approach a tough, research-heavy topic in general? Where do you even start?

- Read everything you can find on the web.
- Read everything you can find that's published on your topic.
- Contact authors and experts who specialize in this field.

This is a lot of work, but it's the only way to properly get up to speed when researching something beyond the realm of your own knowledge.

Picking a fitting investigation point can be all that much a staggering undertaking. It needs to connect with you, and your teachers, besides, it needs to be such that it can be sourced adequately from the accessible data. To add to that, if what you need to elucidate is a piece of the Holocaust, there's reasonable reason behind you to feel overwhelmed.
