Audience involvement is the only thing that matters. Making a film for the theatre is a money loser (so the stats say) unless you are a 60m+ dollar film. Your goal is to gain audiences in any way possible (using a star, controversy, or niche) and transcend some of those fans into super fans, the ones who get really involved and promote your film.

“What I’m all about is playing the audience, I feel like I’m an orchestra conductor, and the audience’s reaction is my orchestra. The sounds you make are my instrument, the feelings you make are my instruments” - Quentin Tarantino

Let's start by changing the philosophy, if you don't have an audience in the first place, why are you making a movie. Believe me, making a movie, especially a good one, for purely 'selfish' reasons (don't put a moralistic standpoint on the word selfish) kills every reward system in your brain, making you and other people miss out on your spectacle. It's a lose - lose.

Audience engagement is important because you lose out on an audience, and they lose out on your film.
