24 Core Server Renders Slower than 8 Core Workstation

I was working with a 24 thread server today trying to process REDCINE-X transcoding faster. The specs are:

2x Xeon (something) @ 2.4GHz 6 cores w/hyper threading (12)
96GB ECC RAM
Striped 256GB SSD on a 6 Gigabit SAS Card

It runs significantly slower than my workstation:

4 core Hyper threading (8) AMD FX 8320 @ 4.9GHz
GTX 780ti also overclocked
24GB RAM
480GB SSD

It also rendered media encoder jobs much slower than my workstation... any insight in how this stuff works?

It really depends what kind of Xeons you are using.

Xeons are around for eons and the performance of older models is far worse than present day models.

Also keep in mind that the software you use can effect the processing speed. ( i.e. some software tools are optimized for specific processors )

Odd question, any sort of GPU acceleration in the server?

Also, keep in mind you've got one third of the cores, but each is running twice as fast on your workstation.

780Ti on the server as well. Liquid cooled might I add.

Sold the server. Have a mini workstation that performs far better is is so much more silent
