Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K – The Great Filmmaking Equalizer

Ok so if you follow Indie Film Hustle at all you know that I love Blackmagic products. I shot my first feature (This is Meg) on the BMCC 2.5K (see the complete breakdown of my crazy camera rig here) and edited/color graded on Davinci Resolve.

Blackmagic is really the best bang for the filmmaker buck. When the Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6k came out I was blown away. I have spoken to many cinematographers that use this gem of a camera as a B or C Camera on an Arri ALEXA set. I’ve color graded both images and in MANY cases you can’t tell the difference. You can see for yourself below.

I’m not saying the Blackmagic Design URSA Mini 4.6k is a better camera than an Arri ALEXA. The Alexa is $45,000- $70,000 camera vs the $5000 Ursa. That being said you get a TON MORE bang for your buck with the URSA.

Check out the shootout with the ALEXA:

What about the magenta sensor issues and random shutting down during takes? A lot of complaints but, wondering if it's just affecting a small number of them. Still sounds like a gamble to buy one.
