Camera recommendations

Hi

I''m looking for a camera for my son and wanted to get something in the $2000 range. Does anyone have any recommendations? I was looking at the GH4 or GH5 and maybe some of the Sony XD Cams like the pxw-x70 or hxr-nx80.

Thanks in advance for the recs.

Gh5 is a lot of bang-for-buck. Can't think of anything much better to start out on.

If he's just starting out I would say the GH4. Then spend money on other accessories for him like a mic, tripod, shoulder rig, lights. and extra batteries/data storage.

Might be able to hook him up with a nice lens as well.

+1 for the GH5. Very versatile camera to start with, and should be easy to sell when your son is ready to upgrade when the GH6 comes along.

I've been thinking about this question since I first saw it asked a week ago. I've been looking at a GH5 for myself too and I got to say it's a damn good camera. Like someone before me said, it's got a lot of bang for the buck. I'd put my money where my mouth is on this and get one for myself too if I could.

I'll step in here with a different recommendation. I really like the Sony A6300/A6500 at this price point. I like the Sony color science better than Panasonic, as well as the e-mount line of lenses, the larger sensor, etc. However that's all a matter of opinion. It doesn't have as strong of a codec but I'm not sure that would be necessary at tbis point anyway.

Yes! I definitely second this. The price and quality of the A6300 is incredible. Perfect beginner's camera that easily produces high quality 4k video. And with the money you save you can buy a small LED kit, tripod, or other useful accessories.
