Can My Reel Be a Short?

Hello, Everyone!

I'm in a bit of a pickle. I want a reel of my best work, but I feel as if my work is just now getting to a point that I feel comfortable publishing a reel.

The thing is all my past work looks/feels dull and unfitting to how I see myself as a filmmaker going forward. Is it alright to shoot a simple visual short with the sole purpose for it to become a reel?

I know a reel is to show off various clientele, but my previous work in that arena doesn't feel as if it's my best foot forward.

Would possible clients and filmmakers still view this style of a reel as beneficial to how they see me as a filmmaker?

Make a trailer for your short and show the trailer as your reel.

the short answer is no;) The longer answer is - until you have a body of work large enough to pull material from to make a reel, show what you have for now. Recognize that potential clients may turn you away for that reason, but just go for it.

One of the hardest things I had to learn about making a reel was; Patience. Wait to put one out there.
