Editing in a dark or bright room? Which do you prefer?

When I'm video editing at home I like to work in a dark environment. Video editing school had us in dark rooms. However my last two jobs (spanning 8 years) have me in bright offices. Recently they just re-did the lights and now it's super bright in here.. I'm just curious as to what other editors or designers prefer.

I prefer to be in a room with slightly less light than my monitor puts out. I like my monitor to be the brightest part of the room, without being so bright that my eyes hurt/fatigue quickly. I found that the greater the contrast in my room when I edit, the more prone to headaches and irritation I am. That is just my experience though, your mileage may vary.

If it is not for critical colour grading I want sunlight, it is a place where you have to spend much of your time and sunlight keeps your biological clock ticking and keeps you happy :). Try to avoid direct sunlight at your screen. For coulour grading you then can close te blinds.
