External handheld recorder for Shotgun Mic?

I saw the Zoom H1 for $99 and saw it was very good, and is a plausible option, but for me i'm on a low-budget and i want to still have money over for a good quality shotgun mic (Possibly the Rode NTG 2,3, or 4/4+)(Any ideas on which one to pick?). But on the cheaper side i saw the Olympus VN-721PC, which has a micro SD slot. Overall, i need help picking the right digital handheld audio for under $100, and are there any here i didn't say.

I would take a look at external recorders at a little bit higher price point (e.g. Zoom H4n is only 100$ more than H1) for the XLR inputs, because most higher-end mics (the Rode NTGs on which you are planning to use) have these connectors.

Best regards, Marc

A $100 recorder won't be much/any better than what a consumer-grade camera has. I used an H4n and while it's handy for recording jam sessions with bands or doing wild sound effects in the field, it isn't ideal for video production. My suggestion would be to buy the best mic you can and save up for something more useful like a TASCAM DR60d (or better) later.
