HDMI recording

Hello, I was just wondering if the Atomos Ninja is IT for inexpensive HDMI recording. I don't really need 10-bit or ProRes, just something better than the typical in-cam <24mbps AVCHD. 50mbps 4:2:2 would be fine (though an I-frame mode would be great).

On a slightly different note, I've seen some HDMI to USB converters. Do any of them offer any good options? It seems like there's 1,000 of them out there and they are generally H.264/AVCHD, though they don't specify bit rates.

Thank you!

I have a bunch of Blackmagic Design Hyperdeck shuttles that I used for this purpose. Very inexpensive and got the job done (422 ProRes). I don't need them anymore, now that I shoot RED.

Hmm, I've had bad luck with Hyper Decks (and BM in general) but I suppose I would still be able to record in-cam for redundancy.
