How to get started doing it for a living?

Hey all!
A few years ago I graduated from a film-school-ish thing, but had some real trouble finding work in the filmmaking field, so I decided to get an unrelated full time job to pay the bills while I looked for something more "for me". It's been a year now and I'm starting to really hate my job. I really need to go back to what I love but I have no real clue how to get anywhere. How did you get your start in going professional in filmmaking, and do you have any tips for someone stuck in a dead end job with dreams of resuming his filmmaking career?

Hello Thomas
I never went to a film school....I just evolved on my own... I guess if you have the visual / creative eye..then it gives you a start...technicalities are something you learn over a period of time or OJT...… best way to start is creating a brief portfolio....shoot small films of friends, any small businesses around your to people, promote yourself... and I believe the rest will fall in place slow and steady
good luck
