How to make background blurry and focus on object and vice versa?

You know the cool shot when the object in the front is blurred and the background is in focus and a few seconds later the object is in focus and the background blurred. How do you do that with a canon 700D camera? Do you have to change focus or something? Please help thanks!

You better put that camera in manual and make the f-stop as low as it can go. And then just get two objects and put them at different positions and simply just turn the focus ring on your lens. I know that Magic Lantern has to do this automatically with the autofous. Choose "Rack Focus" and you will be able to choose your two focus points and then go in between them.

How Zacharry said, you must center with the lens and the f-stop and play with this.

Thanks Zachary! The only blur I knew so far is this http://www.paintshoppro.com/en/pages/blur-images/ in the editing process, but thanks for the insights on how to get this effect while taking the shot :)
