I want to be a DP. So how do I start?

I know the obvious answer: shoot as much as possible. As of right now, I am graduating in May and do not have my own gear. Student loans will probably soak up my funds post graduation. I understand that digital marketing is the bulk of the paid gigs, but films are my true passion. How do I get on set as a Camera Dpt PA or an AC? Is there a website? Somewhere where people need crew other than Mandy?

Start PAing.

Try to work with camera dept if possible. Eventually people will be working on their own projects and, if you've made a good impression, they will remember you for open positions.

Network, remember names and swap info/business cards.

Don't just network with people above you, other PA's as well, as they might reach higher positions before you do.

craigslist-for those with little to no experience and looking to get more
mandy-good for starting out
staffmeup-once you know what you're doing

Ditto what Brandon said - CL is good for folks with no experience.

Good luck!

Look up a bunch of production companies in your area and email your stuff. Try to get your foot in the door by showing the work you've already done, hopefully someone see potential in your work. Good luck.

Also, when you network and meet people, don't tell them what you want to be. Say "I'm an AC ". People will be very quick to dismiss you if you say things such as "aspiring AC/DP"
