List personal equipment for rent?

I'm considering listing some video equipment for rent (and perhaps have it make some money when not in use). First how does one do this, are there rental or freelance sites? Second, has anyone done this and is it worth it?

First thing I would recommend is inventorying and pricing out all the equipment you plan on offering for rent. For pricing out I list original cost, current retail, depreciated value, asking price, bottom line price (if you're open to negotiation). Do your research and know what the going rates are in your area. This list is your friend, like all the paperwork related to your business equipment and money. Make sure you're keeping good records, this will save you time and money come April 15. Once you have the list it's also easier to make sure your insurance is all in order -definitely take care of insurance before you rent anything.

I don't know about rental sites but you can check with your local rental house(s) to see if you can sublet through them. Online boards like reduser (if you got a Red, of course), Mandy, CL, Vimeo, local film bureaus/meeting groups, etc., can be useful DIY routes. And if you do go DIY, I would also suggest getting a simple one page contract with all the rental details laid out, signature and copies of DL and proof of insurance. Keeping a credit card, DL and/or deposit (square, paypal, cash, etc.) will help you avoid getting burnt, but trust your gut.

Ever loaned your friends a book?

How did that work out for you?

Most freelancers rent their equipment with themselves as the operator. So people can hire you for X dollars a day, or they can hire you with your equipment package for X dollars a day plus y dollars a day for your equipment. People usually rent their equipment at a very good price when included with their normal services, which might be half of what a commercial rental place would rent the same equipment for.
