Upvoting/downvoting functionality doesn't seem to work?

I noticed that the vote count doesn't seem to work, particularly for posts within a single topic. You can notice this by the fact that posts at the same depth are not in any way sorted by their popularity. Is this a feature that will be added later? If not, what is the point of upvoting/downvoting?

I think the voting has to go. First that pumpkin kid always gets like -6. I dunno what he's done in the past but this is sheer abuse.

And second it discorages discussion. Ppl just give a "neg" and move on.

I hope it gets disabled.

Agreed, Alex. I don't know the pumpkin kid. But the thing is if the voting is not going to at least do what it's meant to do (move better posts up), then there's no benefit to it either.

I think we'll have to reach a certain tipping point of community size for up/down voting to live up to its potential.

The difference between 0 and 1 is not statistically significant for us to sort by those numbers.

We will also tweak the algorithms over time -- right now what is considered "hot" is a blend of votes, comments, and views.

Thanks for your response, Ryan. It seems like a simple sort would work well (at least within same levels within comments and forum threads), but you are a lot more involved with this than I am, so probably know what is best. It sounds like the votes are being used for some algorithms already, so it's good to know that it's not useless to vote.

It is hard to tell what it’s doing to affect the presentation of the site, but that makes sense now that Ryan’s explained that it’s only a part of the algorithm.

I have to say that I like the new improvement I just noticed that lets me know whether I’ve already voted on a post or comment. Nice tweak guys!

…and I also just noticed that you can upvote your own posts and comments. I never tried that before, but I think that definitely needs to change as that’s going to throw off some rankings. :(
