videomic pro recording quality

hi
i recently bought the rode videomic pro to my canon 650d, but after a few tests i can say that it's sound qaulity is far worse than what iv'e heard in tests online, in fact it isnt even significantly better than the built-in mic. i tried changing the settings to manual, putting it one notch above the lowest and the videomic on +20db, it definately helps with the hiss but the sound quality is still not what i expected.
am i doing something wrong? how come it sounds so good on youtube but bad on my camera(with almost no background noise)?

The hiss is from your Canon 650D, so there's not much you can do about it, other than using audio noise-reduction software in post. ( one of the reasons I sold my Canon 60D was because of the noisy audio )

Connect your VideoMic Pro to a decent quality portable recorder and you will have much better audio recordings. ( always record your audio at 48 kHz 24-bit )
