What are some current trends and practices in the film industry?

I am doing a research assignment on the current trends and practices that are being used in the industry right now. I know this is a very generalized question but any information would be very helpful. Any supporting articles are plus.

Subjects can range from technology, cameras, distribution, marketing, directing, funding, producing, to music, etc.

Bypassing the Hollywood system through self financing and self distribution is a fairly new phenomena that is worthy of more exploration. I would start with two film-makers who appear to be breaking new ground with this model: Kevin Smith ( "Red State", "Tusk" ) and Shane Carruth ( "Upstream Color", "Primer" )

Regarding the Hollywood studios, lately they make almost only blockbuster tent-pole movies, mainly based on existing material (re-boots, sequels etc). They pass the medium budget movies as they think the risk and the cost for advertising is too high. So we have only the 2 extremes of the spectrum: big budget films or very low budget indies.

Promising more than will ever be delivered. Although that's not new.

The distribution of the final product has always been a complex process involving lots of money. Though some indie flicks broke these barriers, it will be good if these processes become more flexible in an easy to access process. So that not just big flicks get to be shown in thousands of theaters. Looking for more indie distributors in future.
