. Where would I sell my shortfilm then. I need money , afterall I have to keep alive my filmmaking project and do different creative things.
Use your short film to help sell investors for your next project. That's how it can help make you money - when you use it to market for your next project. Thats what I did, 5 minutes short to fund a 40 minute short - which we are now using to fund a feature film. It also depends on the film, can you get into some festivals to get the film noticed? How long is the film - could it be an hour long HBO original or a 30 minute long pieces? Think about where you think it would fit and then try to find the people who can get it there...

Find a way to fund it completely by your production team. Your first efforts will almost certainly NOT pay for themselves, except the way Scott said. Aspiring cinematographers use aspiring actors.

Web series are another form of short films (though serial) and though there a fair share that only bring buzz that can lead to more opportunities, more and more are finding ways to support themselves. It can also lead to opportunities shooting music videos and commercials, or if your eye is only on feature film, like Scott & Michael have mentioned and I think is brilliant, it's a great way to show potential investors what you can do.
