DZOFILM's New Vespid Primes Have Large-Format Filmmaking Covered

DZOFILM has followed up its MFT 20-70mm T2.9 "Linglung" zoom and Super 35 "Pictor" zooms with its first set of cine primes designed for large-format filmmaking. 

The Vespid primes, aptly named after a wasp, are said to be "nimble and agile," thanks to their lightweight and uniform design. The set offers focal lengths of 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, and 125mm at T2.1 as well as a 90mm T2.8 Macro (1:1.5) lens.

Each focal length cover sensors with an image circle up to 46.5mm, allowing the lenses to pair with RED DSMC2, ARRI Alexa LF, Panasonic VariCam LT, and Sony VENICE, or with any full-frame DSLR and mirrorless camera. 

As with any quality cinema lenses, Vespid primes feature standard 0.8 mod gears for focus and iris that are positioned uniformly across the lineup making quick changes on set a cinch. The lenses also tout the same 80mm front diameter and M77 filter thread, allowing you to use the same size matte box or filters.

Along with its fast aperture, the lenses have a 16-blade aperture design that creates a pleasing round bokeh and can be stopped down to T16. 

The lenses weigh between 1.6lbs-2lbs (732g-940g) and are compact in size. Better yet, they have a lofty 270° focus throw, while the 90mm offers 300° of throw. In terms of image quality, we expect a similar neutral color found on the Pictor lenses, which will allow you to easily switch between primes and zooms when shooting Super 35. But further testing will be needed to find out exactly.  

Each lens is available in either PL or EF mount.

For pricing, the 25/35/50/75/100/125mm T2.1 lenses are $1,249 each. The 90mm T2.8 Macro (1:1.5) is $1,499.

DZOFILM is offering discounts in set form. You can get a set of 6 (without the macro) for $6,499 ($995 in savings), or all 7 for $7,799 ($1,200 in savings). 

At the moment, you can only choose between PL or EF, but DZOFILM says the extra bayonet will be made available later. The lenses are available for pre-order now and will start shipping November 6th with the 90mm T2.8 Macro coming in December.
