We are less than three weeks away from James Cameron’s highly-anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, splashing into theaters. After the many successes Cameron has had as a filmmaker over the course of his career, fans and moviegoers are eager to watch how Cameron has entertainment even further.
The 68-year-old director has dedicated much of the last 25 years to building the Na’vi world of Avatar, and we have to wonder if the filmmaker will continue making films.
It turns out, Cameron might already have a retirement plan. When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter during his press tour for the film, Cameron touched on the already-confirmed plans for the two upcoming sequels, set to debut every two years instead of every 10 years, if there is a demand for the films.
If the demand is there, then Cameron is prepared to continue the story for Avatar 6 and 7.

“I’d be 89 [years old] by then, [but] obviously, I’m not going to be able to make Avatar movies indefinitely, [with] the amount of energy required,” Cameron said, confirming that he will pass the directorial duties on to someone he trusts with his world. “I would have to train somebody how to do this because, I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do this.”
After nine feature films under his belt, pushing the boundaries of big-budget filmmaking, and landing two of his films in the top five-grossing films of all time, Cameron’s final few years of directing are nearing.
I don’t believe the filmmaker will step away from the industry completely. While he might take a step back from the camera, I believe he will still be scribbling away at ideas that come to him until he has a few scripts ready to send out to his favorite studios to work with. The man was born to entertain the masses, and I assume that is what he will do until his final days.
While the melancholy will creep in on the day Cameron does retire from directing, we must tip our hats to him for pushing the limits of VFX since its early days in cinema with films like Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Abyss, and, of course, Avatar.
