The pattern for camera announcements the last half-decade or so has generally been the same. The manufacturer goes into the lab to develop and then teases it online. Shortly after, the full specs are leaked prior to the official launch, which leaves few surprises on release day.

The LUMIX DC-S5, Panasonic's next full-frame mirrorless camera has fallen to the same fate as its specs have found their way online. While they're not officially confirmed by Panasonic, there's no question that Twitter user @nokishita_c tweets facts. So, let's take a look at the rumored video features.

Initial Thoughts

Unlike Nikon's Z5, the S5 doesn't look to be an entry-level mirrorless hybrid camera. If these specs are correct, the S5 is as good as the S1 in most places and better in others. It records 10-bit 4:2:2 internally, has dual native ISO, dual SD card slots, it supports anamorphic modes, V-log shooting, and shrinks in size and weight. It also offers 4K 60p at 4:2:2 10-bit and 4K 50p at 4:2:0 8-bit.

The one sore spot for shooters may be the contrast AF system. The demand for quality autofocus is becoming increasingly popular as it's one less thing for one-man-bands to worry about. Canon uses Dual Pixel Autofocus, Sony has its hybrid system, Nikon uses a hybrid AF, but Panasonic continues to use a contrast autofocus system. Is it better than nothing? Sometimes. Is it more reliable than manually focusing? Depends on the hand.

We could see Panasonic jump to a phase-detection autofocus system in the future, but it doesn't look like it's happening with the S5. What are your thoughts on the camera? Share them below.
