After months of being teased with the secret trailer, Paul Thomas Anderson just released the trailer for his new film, Licorice Pizza, online this morning:

Starring Cooper Hoffman, Alana Haim (from the band Haim), Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, Tom Waits, and Uncut Gemsco-director Benny Safdie, Licorice Pizza promises a movie about those trying to make it big in Hollywood in the 1970s. While making it big seems to be the element that carries the story forward, the film is also a coming-of-age story that everyone can find a piece of themselves in.

Licorice Pizza follows Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) as he meets and falls in love with “the girl he is going to marry,” Alana Kane (Alana Haim), and they explore the San Fernando Valley of 1973. While the film is full of breakout stars, Bradley Cooper’s character who may or may not be the hairdresser and longtime Hollywood character, Jon Peters, might be the most exciting. His dynamic energy and aggression alone will make you want to go and see this movie.

The trailer paired with David Bowie's “Life on Mars” prepares us for a fun and somber experience as Gary and Alana grow up with and without each other. I couldn’t think of a better song to emphasize the muted color palette of the film, but Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood is also set to compose the movie’s score, as he has worked on Anderson’s last four films.

Anderson has been vocal about his support for the theatrical experience and has rewarded moviegoers with the Licorice Pizza trailer before releasing it online. It should be no surprise that Licorice Pizza will be available only in theaters this November since Anderson went to great lengths to keep his trailer out of the online sphere for so long.
