Netflix Is Bringing You a Making of 'The Irishman' Podcast
After the success with Stranger Things and Chernobyl, the podcast world is bringing Martin Scorsese to the front with an Irishman show.
Podcasts are all the rage -- especially those about popular movies and TV shows. Now, one of cinema's iconic voices is coming to the podcasting world.
Martin Scorsese's The Irishman is getting it's own behind the scenes podcast. The news was reported by The Wall Street Journalfirst and then confirmed by Netflix on Twitter.
From the journal's report:
"Netflix plans to unveil at least two more companion podcasts by the end of the year, including one with the working title “Behind the Irishman,” which will detail the making of Martin Scorsese’s film The Irishman, debuting on the platform in November."
While there are no confirmed guests or episode topics yet, it is safe to assume since Netflix has an "in" with the director, you can expect to hear him on the airwaves sooner rather than later. Maybe even some of his cast members like De Niro and Pacino.
Obviously, as with any Scorsese movie, this could be seen as part of a massive awards push.
Chernobyl followed the podcast route and wound up creating a fervent fan base come awards season, when the show cleaned up at the Emmys.
These podcasts are not cheap and can cost more than $10,000 per episode to produce. Since they are not ad supported, this is money largely funded by the studio behind them.
This is a genius marketing strategy, a great way to get people obsessed with a particular property and allow them unfettered access to it. Kevin Smith did this with Red State and Red State of the Union and it definitely helped him get butts in seats for the tour. So much so that he built a podcasting network to help him with other television show ideas and movies. And now it's a place for his fans to find him.
Scorsese probably doesn't need a place for his niche, but moving forward, I would not be surprised if more independent or studio filmmakers carve out those podcast arenas to control the narrative on a project. One that can help give that film or TV release an extra boost entering awards season.
