In true RED fashion, the company that at one point changed the cinema camera forever has previewed a new Super 35mm V-Raptor Cinema Camera.
Dubbed the Rhino Raptor because of its deep rhino gray finish, the new cinema camera is capable of capturing 8K video at 120 fps. From what RED CEO Jarred Land says, it is a “bit larger” than a standard Super35 sensor with a dimension of 26.21 mm x 13.82mm.

A Bit Larger, You Say?
The Rhino is housed in RED’s flagship DSMC3 housing and uses a 35.4 Megapixel Super 35mm CMOS image sensor that is capable of more than 16.5 stops of dynamic range. Utilizing the RED-branded CFExpress or other qualified media cards, the camera processes an 8K image at a data rate of up to 800 MB/second.
RED has designed the Rhino Raptor to provide a competitive 8K performance that surpasses that of the full-frame VV Raptor model, which only supports Super35mm at 6K. With the 8K CMOS sensor, the Rhino can work in concert with its larger frame cousin and deliver the same color and resolution.
The camera supports REDCode RAW HQ, MQ, and LQ codec options with RED IPP2 Gamma color science, and in addition to 8K video at up to 120 fps, it also handles 7K at 140 frames per second, and 4K at 240 fps. There are also resolution options going all the way down to 2K with 600 frames per second.

A Myriad of Aspect Ratio Options
As for aspect ratio, the Rhino Raptor supports 2:1, 2.4:1, 16:9, and 17:9 in 8K RAW, as well as 1.25:1, 1.3:1, 1.5:1, 1.6:1, 1.8:1 and 2:1 when opting for shooting in widescreen anamorphic.
The Rhino accepts Canon RF Lenses through the native mount, and EF mount lenses through an RF-EF adapter. It also supports through-lens communication with metadata.

Other features include dual 12G-SDI ports, 5-pin LEMO audio connectors, and a USB-C port, and it supports RED's 7-inch touchscreen LCD for camera control. There’s also a right-hand user interface for a camera assistant to make fine adjustments.
The camera is powered by the more compact micro V-mount batteries, but can also be powered by a 6-pin LEMO 17-volt VDC power port. The overall weight of the camera is around 4lb, which makes it an attractive system for lightweight productions that need the 8K resolution.
A Charitably Wild Price
Land says in his Instagram post that while the Rhino Raptor has a retail price of around $19,500, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to wildlife charities, presumably those that will support protecting endangered Rhino populations in Africa.

The Rhino Raptor isn’t currently listed on the RED.com store page. However, it is available for preorder from B&H, which encourages interested parties to contact them by phone or email.
