It's been a long haul (and a long wait) for RED Komodo, but it has officially arrived. As RED does with most of its announcements, Jarred Land released a statement in the RED forum of its availability shortly after Panasonic released its compact BGH1 camera.

As expected, the price for Komodo body is just under $6K for the body only, but RED has put together two kits: a Starter Kit for $7,200 and a Production Kit for $8,200.

Before its official release, RED went through a number of beta software versions (and colors) to get the cinema camera up and running. We spoke to filmmaker Tim Daust who got his hands on an early model. You can read all about his experience and watch several field tests here.

Future updates are expected to include phase detection autofocus and native support for the Canon RF mount.
