SmallHD has re-engineered the familiar to give us something new. The company has added the 2403 High Bright to its production monitor line. For those not in the know, SmallHD previously had two 24" versions, the 2403 Full HD Studio monitor for $3,499 and the 2403 HDR for $5,499. The 2403 High Bright strips away the HDR but adds brightness at a lower cost.

SmallHD made waves for its affordable daylight viewable on-camera monitors. Since then, the company has evolved offering wireless solutions via Teradek and larger-sized production monitors. The 2403 High Bright is a repackaged sibling offering 1600 nits of brightness with 1920 x 1080 resolution. The 2403 HDR offered only 1000 nits and the 2403 Full HD Studio only 250 nits. Both previous versions have been almost completely scrubbed from the SmallHD website tipping us that the 2403 High Bright will be replacing both.
The rest of the specs are shadows of the former models. There's a bump in contrast from 3000:1 to 3100:1. It also has a 178-degree all angles of view and 100% Rec 709 color reproduction. The color depth will be 10-bit but 8+2 FRC. Meaning, it's not a true 10-bit monitor. For connections, there's 2x 3G-SDI inputs, 2x 3G-SDI outputs and HDMI input/output ports along with a stereo headphone jack.
However, an advantage of the 2403 High Bright is its lightweight design weighing only 13.9 lbs (6.3 kg). Compared to 2403 HDR at 19.1 lbs (8.7 kg) and Studio at 18 lbs (8.6 kg) SmallHD has reduced the weight by roughly 25%. This is largely in part from its new aluminum chassis. Power options include an XLR input (12-34VDC) and a 2- pin locking output (12V, 4A) for V-mount or Gold-mount batteries. Like other SmallHD products, it's packed with monitoring tools like scopes, waveform, and dual view functionality to monitor two different signals side-by-side.
The 2403 High Bright fits in with the 1303 HDR and the 1703 P3X, but it's worth noting it's only a HD monitor. If you're in the market for 4K HDR or 4K monitoring, SmallHD has its Cine and Vision monitors coming sometime this spring.
