When Sony released the FX6, Atomos followed suit, saying it would support external ProRes RAW recording. The Australian-based company has now released a firmware update that allows FX6 shooters to take advantage of the compressed RAW format. 

When paired with the Shogun 7, the FX6 can record external ProRes RAW up to 4K DCI 60p over SDI. Though the FX6 can output a 16-bit linear RAW signal, the Shogun 7 will convert the existing 16-bit signal to 12-bit color depth. 

Since there isn't a 16-bit Apple ProRes RAW codec available at the moment, the conversion is a moot point. 

ProRes RAW is proving itself to be a very efficient and powerful intermediate codec. For filmmakers, it provides a greater amount of latitude, allowing you to push the parameters of an image. Better yet, both ProRes RAW and the less compressed ProRes RAW HQ have manageable file sizes, making RAW workflows attainable for nearly any budget. For perspective, 12-bit RAW is the same file size as 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes. 

Atomos supports over 20 cameras with ProRes RAW, which includes the Sony FX9.

With firmware version 10.43, Shogun 7 fully supports the FX6 and can be used as your primary recorder or as a multi-cam switcher for live production, a feature we previously reviewed.
