Tamron users might recall the AF 28-200mm F3.8-5.6 released in 1992. This new model infuses all of the company's latest expertise into this new model. Optically, the lens contains 18 elements in 14 groups, including GM (Glass Molded) Aspherical, hybrid aspherical, XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), and LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements to suppress chromatic aberrations. Tamron also added its BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating to reduce ghosting and flare. In-camera correction features minimize distortion and maintain edge-to-edge sharpness at all focal lengths.

The 28-200mm F2.8-5.6 joins several focal lengths in Tamron's full-frame Di III line, including the 17-28mm F2.8 and 70-180mm F2.8. The series shares a common 67mm filter diameter to mount ND and PL filters. The 28-200mm F2.8 has an overall length of 4.6" and weighs 20.3 oz. The fast aperture has a 7 blade design which is has a near-perfect circle at two stops down from maximum aperture. At 28mm the MOD (Minimum Object Distance) is 7.5" so it might not be the best option for interior car work depending on the situation.

The lens utilizes an RXD stepping motor for quiet autofocus. When mounting a microphone on the Sony camera with the lens it shouldn't pick up any of the lens noise during autofocus. As with other lenses in the series, its moisture resistant, has a fluorine coating to repel oil and water, and there's a zoom lock switch located on the barrel.
