As Tarantino gears up to release his ninth film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he's hitting the interview circuit hard and being open about his inspirations and plans for the future.
On a recent interview on CinemaBlend's ReelBlend podcast (which hasn't been released yet), Tarantino was asked about his Star Trek script.
If you aren't aware, Tarantino pitched an idea for a Star Trek movie at Paramount and apparently has a script ready. He told Slashfilm in May:
"The script has been written and when I emerge my head like Punxsutawney Phil, post-Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, we’ll pick up talking about it again."
Last month, he also confirmed that his take on the cinematic universe would definitely be R-rated.
Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, tweeted some oblique support for Tarantino's edgy idea.
But the main thing many fans want to know is how a Star Trek movie would factor into Tarantino's promise to retire after making ten films.
Tarantino told them:
"I guess I do have a loophole, if the idea was to throw a loophole into it. Which would be, ‘Well, I guess Star Trek doesn't count. I can do Star Trek… but naturally I would end on an original.’ But the idea of doing ten isn't to come up with a loophole. I actually think, if I was going to do Star Trek, I should commit to it. It's my last movie. There should be nothing left-handed about it. I don't know if I'm going to do that, but that might happen."
Tarantino goes on to say that, if Star Trek gets greenlit and he does direct, he might use the opportunity to explore the career he never had, as a director-for-hire taking on others' projects. Whatever the case, he still sounds pretty set on bowing out after number ten, no matter what the project is.
