While Canon was confirming the features of the EOS R5 over the last several months, rumors mounted about the EOS R6, an alternative to its 8K sibling. The EOS R6 packs a lot of the same features of the EOS R5, but it lacks in other places including sensor readout, recording format, form factor, and more. And yes, there is a crop in video mode.

The sensor oversamples 5.1K to create its 4K UHD images. It's capable of recording internal video at 4K up to 59.94fps or 1080p up to 119.88fps in 10-bit 4:2:2 Canon Log H.265/HEVC or HDR PQ. In its current firmware, Canon has capped off the resolution at 4K UHD, but it still offers Canon Log at its highest resolution and bit rate. There is also a small crop around 1.07x while shooting video. Files are recorded to a dual UHS-II SD card slot.

The EOS R6 is equipped with a hefty ISO range of 100-102400 that's expandable to 204800. The camera has Dual Pixel Autofocus that covers 100% of the area using 1053 automatically selectable zones. Manually, 6,072 point can be selected. Users will see the same subject tracking technology found on the EOS R5 and the 5-axis in-body image stabilization that works jointly with the optical image stabilization (IS) found on RF and EF lenses.

The controls and layout of the EOS R6 is different than the EOS R5. The top LCD is missing on the EOS R6 and it also doesn't have a flash sync port. The mode button is different as well. With the new body comes a new LP-E6NH battery and optional BG-R10 ($349) battery grip. It's worth noting that the EOS R6 is not compatible WFT-R10A ($999) battery grip that includes wireless file transfers and a Ethernet port.

Canon has priced the EOS R6 $1,400 less than the EOS R5 at $2,499 for the body only and $2,899 for the EOS R6 and RF 24-105 F4-7.1 IS STM lens kit. Canon also has a EOS R6 and RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens kit available for $3,599. Its arrival date is the end of August.
