The ignorance of people who are in a position that they could never see themselves needing a product like this, therefore feel a product like this is useless, is frustrating. Get off your pedestal and realize that there is an entire world out there (with far more people that the ones who live in yours) of filmmakers who don't have money pouring out of their pockets, and could run into situations where products like this are useful.

Case in point: I'm leading a team which has been funded with a very low budget ~$50K to produce the first three episodes of a pilot series. The series is high concept, VFX heavy, and per the broadcaster required to be shot in 4K. We're in a small town where equipment rental just doesn't exist, 95% of the gear we used is our own, including our FS7. We have a C100 but the 4K requirement put it out commission.

There were several times where an alt angle of a single take moment like a stunt or complex setup would've been great to have. One day we were lucky enough to have another guy come in with his RED, but that was it. We pretty much had to shoot the entire series on one camera. I would've loved to have the option of throwing an extra lens on a phone and use it for a quick coverage or insert shot on some of our action scenes. For a one or two second insert of something that couldn't be reproduced, it would've been a great boost to our production value. Instead, we have a few big moments that are stuck with one wide coverage shot.

My point is, stop looking at the world of filmmaking through your perfect, professional lens. How many of you got your careers started with janky-ass self-made rigs, hanging cameras out of cars or doing ridiculous things like faking a dolly move on rollerblades, building cheap mounts out of plywood and duct tape? You probably wouldn't be where you are right now if you and the people you worked with didn't get creative and think outside of the box, and products like this are just a new tool to help new filmmakers do exactly that. This industry is harsh enough as it is, check your privilege at the door sometimes and be happy that crazy innovations like this are helping more people bring crazy dreams to life, so that one day they won't need these tools anymore either.

Writing a product off because it doesn't fit your needs is extremely ignorant. I've seen countless products that I thought would be no use to me but I can see their value to other people. Maybe for what you do this wouldn't be useful, but there are limitless jobs out there where a tool like this would be awesome.
I wouldn't jump on it without trying it out first, but for what I do it seems incredibly valuable. Run and gun entertainment news for a community channel with a C100. The budgets are low - they pay well enough if you're not sinking a big investment into equipment, but definitely not enough to spend money on high end gear.
They're also fast environments with locations constantly on the move and the sooner you can be in and out of a shoot the better. If this rig is only half as effective as a dedicated rig in each category, it's already vastly better than nothing at all and would be totally worth it for $500.

I agree with those points and it was all very good advice. I'm reading "Detour: How To Direct a Microbudget Film" right now and it's parallel to a lot of what I've read so far. But saying Spielberg has nothing to say is just silly. Maybe not as effectively as his earlier movies but he's still a master of the craft and has always been an actor's director.

Couldn't agree more about live events. Conferences and the like are the most boring things on earth. I have serious issue not falling asleep even while standing up tracking as the MCU on conference shoots.

Would kill to get into editing commercials..any tips how to go about finding them? The only stuff we've ever gotten to edit are ones we've shot ourselves and they're few and far between.

At the price it goes for now, if you don't need the features it lacks it is absolutely worth it. Best camera I've ever had by a long-shot.
