Erm, FS7 rather than F7.

Article Comment – Insane Price Drops on Canon Cinema Cameras Including the C300 & C100

I think they pretty much had to drop the price, regardless of whether or not a C300 MkII is coming out. It's ridiculous by how much the F7 outclasses it at $8000.

Article Comment – The Cinematographer's Process (Part 2): Defining Your Camera Strategy

Hey Robert, out of interest, what's the status of this film? Abandoned project? If so, how close did you guys get to making it? Facebook page doesn't seem to be working.

Article Comment – SmallHD Introduces a 5" 1080p Monitor Weighing Less Than One Pound

I'm someone with a very low budget who doesn't like to spend on unnecessary things, so I do want to ask people this clueless question: how necessary is a proper production or field monitor if you already have a computer monitor, iPad or TV set? For instance, would the above SmallHD solution be better than buying a Teradek clip and streaming to an iPad, or, cheaper yet, Google Chromecast and streaming to a TV...?

I suppose it might depend on what that external monitor is for -- whether it's director/client (in which case maybe all they need is something basic) or DOP (where they might want access to waveform, etc) or whether it might even be used in post by someone who wants extremely accurate colours.

Thoughts?

Article Comment – Video: Do You Lack Confidence in Screenwriting? So Does Francis Ford Coppola

People often think of a treatment as a one- to five-page summary you do as part of your "Please give me money" package. But I suspect that, in the good old days, treatments did tend to be longer and to serve a creative purpose as well, fleshing ideas out in your mind and allowing you to communicate more easily with collaborators. Robert McKee mentions somewhere that the treatment for Casablanca was book-length.

That's probably the main thing I took from the interview. I think if you did have Coppola's discipline, to convert your draft screenplay into a short story and back again, that could make a big difference to the quality of your film.

By the way, someone told me once, maybe McKee again, that, for every movie he makes, Spielberg vomits before principal photography starts. Don't know if that's true or not, but wouldn't be surprised.

Article Comment – This is How World-Class DP Robby Müller Lights a Scene: A Step by Step Masterclass

Hi Torben, thanks for the comment. Would be interested to hear what else you'd do to finish the setup.

(Yeah, the voting on this site sucks! It was always a hostile and ego-driven environment. Real names improved the situation. Voting is a peace offering to the trolls.)
