Good point. I agree that underexposure is a useful approach, but I'm not sure if contemporary filmmakers are afraid of it, I actually feel like it's becoming more fashionable. Just look at quality stock image agencies - many contributors rely on ambient light and 'underexposure' (in quote marks because under or over exposure is relative, in my opinion). Or the work of Ryan Booth.
