Creator/Filmmaker
I make space based sci-fi films. My first film "Space Trucker Bruce" is available on YouTube. My current project is called "Girl, Yeti, and a Spaceship". It's being filmed in the woods surrounding Juneau, Alaska and on sets built in Juneau. I'm currently doing the post production and should be done by 2021. I work as a programmer to support my film habit.
Wonderful commercial! The cat was the best part or maybe the expression on the actors face, or the beautiful cinematography! Getting a cat to look so calm in a moving car must have been a challenge. A 1996 Honda Accord can be a decent used car if not abused.
I like using my Bolex to get the 16mm look. It's more fun than pretending. The real drawback to film is the cost as he mentions. $130 for 3 minutes! I'm still sitting on a roll of Bigfoot footage, waiting to afford to develop it. Alright, it's fictional Bigfoot footage but I liked the way that sounded. I normally use a Black Magic Cinema camera and I'm so happy with the image quality and similarities to film that I don't feel a need to add flicker or grain or tweak the image much. I'm going to try FilmConvert software to see what the footage would look like with various film settings (LUTs) applied to it.
It's a beautiful camera! They shot some of the demo footage around Juneau, Alaska and at the Mendenhall Glacier 3 miles from my home! I was quite surprised to see that! It's a great location for scenic images but somehow they managed to travel up here on one of the few sunny days this summer and get footage. I've been struggling all summer to get sunny filming days.
I wish this video spent more time on useful tips. The best thing about the iPhone is having a decent quality 4K camera in your pocket. I love being able to shoot video on a whim. It's also pretty amazing to be able to shoot edit and upload on the same device. I can think of several drawbacks to making a movie using the iPhone but it's perfect for YouTube videos, Behind the scenes footage, and grabbing the occasional Bigfoot video while out hiking.
The L and J cut thing is a big one. I made that mistake with my first project Space Trucker Bruce but discovered and corrected it before I finished. Right now my biggest headache is editing together Kayaking and Hiking Montages! How do you mix in Scenery B-roll and keep things smooth? It's easy enough to edit dialog between two or three people. There are tons of examples of that but not a lot about hiking and Kayaking montages.
The ship is beautiful! The set is really nice too but only one set? I think you should be more ambitious with your sci-fi movies. Just write what you want and figure out how to make it. Why settle? They didn't need to spend so much money on name actors. It's not going to add much to your story (although you might get more views). I made Space Trucker Bruce for $10,000. https://youtu.be/kcOaAqGBWLo It has 7 sets built out of cardboard, several dressed locations, 5 spaceship/station models, a space suit, robots, and lots of rendered space shots. Granted, the quality and acting is lower but I told the story I wanted.
