My name is Brendan Plake. I am a freelance video shooter and editor, based in Middletown, CT.
The funny thing is that in Mad Max: Fury Road all the interviews I have seen with the crew say that George Miller was constantly saying "we'll fix it in post" and I think that movie was incredible. Fix it in post doesn't necessarily mean lazy all of the time.
I went to the Blackmagic Day rent in NYC last week and saw 2 demos of the new editing features and the new coloring features in Resolve 12. There are so many great improvements in this new version I may be able to use just one application now for everything! The shot matching feature when demoed on a couple of different types of clips actually worked surprisingly well. It was presented as an option to help less experienced colorists get their footage looking and feeling similar. They used it on some clips that were shot outside of skydiving and also snowmobiling and I was impressed with the results. I can't wait to try it myself!
I am going to go ahead and echo what Jamie Gregor said and say that Thunderbolt is an added expense that you will never actually take advantage of. The read/write speeds of even the best SSD's still don't come close to the full speeds available with a USB 3.0 connection and unless, as Jamie said, you're getting a RAID system, thunderbolt will just jack the price of whatever you're buying up without delivering a benefit to you for spending the extra money. I work off of a G-Drive external with a 7200RPM drive inside over USB 3.0 with no problems. I also shoot with the BMPCC and have never had an issue with this setup.

Sure. Except Premiere Pro costs money and Davinci Resolve Lite doesn't. The lite version is always full featured enough for most people and you can't beat free.
How can you use an iPhone as a stand in for a professional monitor? Is there a legitimate way to make this happen? I would honestly love to know!
