We have used drones on set before and the wind and sound generated is always an issue. Until there is something that operates more silently and won't blow stuff all over the place I don't see them replacing other types of equipment anytime soon.
Have you priced out a similarly configured RED? Your looking at a minimum of $35,000.00 for a production ready configuration.
I have their Terra 6K and it cuts remarkably well with footage we have shot in production with Alexa cameras at 1/8th the cost. I think given how well these cameras are fighting outside of their weight class they are very affordable.
I have their Terra 6K and work with other DPs who have used Their Kinemax and T4k. They do bring their cameras to market ( with the exception of the Terra 5k ) - but if you live in the states you have to order directly from China our one of their European dealers. They haven’t really made thebcaneras easily accessible in North America.
Not sure what he's talking about as far as most gimbal footage being wide angle ... some of my favorite focal lengths to shoot with are 50mm @ t1.5 and 85mm @t1.5 - yes pulling focus requires measuring marks or working with an AC but I disagree with the notion that gimbals are mostly used with wide angle focal lengths...
Jocelyn - everyone is of of course entitled to their opinion but from the perspective of someone who owns pretty much all the cameras you listed and also who has shot quite a bit with Alexa’s & RED’s as well I’m truly impressed with the overall IQ and apparent DR of the MAVO. The roll-off on the highlights is extremely pleasing in most of the shots. The exterior shots that I assume were available light look fantastic and are relatively noise free. Most of the noise I did see seem to be within the luminance channels not chroma so it has a very organic almost film like feel.
I imagine if the filmmaker wanted to push the grade could have done something that looks even more stylized / cinematic but I imagine was trying to demonstrate something that was a bit more neutral.
The camera looks fantastic. It’s been a tossup between that and some gently used RED 8k Helium’s on my end. What I have seen coming out of that MAVO lately makes that choice a bit harder.
