Born and raised in The Bronx, New York, Joel Alfonso Vargas is a dedicated filmmaker, activist and advocate of conscientious art. He graduated from Lafayette College with a bachelor’s degree in Film and Media Studies and International Affairs with a self-designed concentration in international film. He also spent a year at Goldsmiths College in London and at the Film and Television School at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague where he studied directing and European film theory. Since beginning his career as an aspiring film director, Joel has worked on over 9 original short films featuring a broad array of stories, subjects and styles, from conventional to experimental, documentary and fiction. His films have premiered to positive reception in venues and film festivals around the world.
Joel is currently a Fulbright postgraduate grantee living in London, UK and pursuing a Master's degree in Filmmaking at the University of the Arts, London: London College of Communication. In 2016, he hopes to return to Los Angeles to complete his concurrent MFA degree at USC in film directing.
