Levi Stutzman
Director-Filmmaker
I am a filmmaker still growing and learning. I do film production and animation for a living, and I am making films in my spare time. I would love to be able to fully support myself from filmmaking alone, but my main goal is to have fun making movies and I don't want to rush anything or make it so that making movies isn't fun anymore. I love camera gear and looking for new ways to use my gear.
Canon C100. Panasonic GH4. GoPro Hero 3. DJI Phantom 2. Adobe Creative Suite.
I would love this camera...if it was 13+ stops of dynamic range. I used a BMCC and really loved the Dynamic range. I have a C100 now and thats the only thing I miss about the Blackmagic. Even 13 on the GH4 is great. I don't know if I can buy another 12 stop camera.
Ive never done it before...but now that these ultra small 4K cameras are coming out, Im tempted to see how nicely I could film a movie at the theater. Bring one of these and a zoom recorder and you've a pretty good pirating system. haha
I think Canon is obviously showing who their target market is...Photographers. Canon only wants to give stills cameras to Photographers and wants cinematographers to buy the Cinema cameras. Canon has said they really have no intention to come out with a camera that competes with the GH4/A7s.
Don't get me wrong, this is probably a great camera. But I doubt it will give you an image you can't get with another camera from Sony/Panasonic. I love canon and thank them for everything they did with revolutionizing the Indie Filmmaker world, but they've been out played by the competition.
Yeah, but its still more practical effects than most movies do now. I mean look at the Star Wars prequel series, they shot everything on a blue stage. Unfortunately today, this is considered to be a lot of practical effects. The FXguide article is really just showing a few plates where they had large machinery and things that literally don't exist anywhere for them to use practically.
I thought about the 5k iMac when it first came out, but I think for video production you need the option to expand your workstation. I think the 5K iMac could be a great option for someone in the news field, or someone that just needs to edit footage. But for someone that needs to do special effects, color grade, and 3D, I'll need to have the option to get more power EASILY into my workstation. My workflow now may only be compressed 4K from a GH4 and 1080p ProRes from a C100, but who knows-next project I could be dealing with RAW 240fps footage from a FS700.
