Absolutely disagree. That's exactly what makes you connect with the character so deeply, so intensely, at least for me.
I think it's just a matter of getting used to it, as it's a bit different than most other setups. Maybe there are other reasons you didn't connect with her talking to you directly, as much. Just a thought.
