Article Comment – Steven Spielberg's Heated Issues with Netflix Grow Stronger

If the Academy changed the rules so that a wider cinema release was required - where is the problem here? That opens up a Netflix film to an audience who don’t have Netflix (they do exist) and makes the point that the film isn’t just “made for TV” (I.e. Emmy-worthy). I don’t think Spielberg is trying to prevent Netflix funded films winning awards but just challenging the way they currently exploit the system (and, to be fair, why wouldn’t they?).

Roma was obviously worthy of awards. Most other films I’ve seen made by Netflix (“BirdBox” for example) is of a much lower standard.

Alongside this all is the question of whether the Netflix model will actually survive. They are losing massive amounts of money. Ridiculous amounts. If they don’t expand at the rate they need to it could all sink. Hollywood regularly ditches projects when they lose money - check the last instalment of the Divergent Series when part 3.1 didn’t make enough money 3.2 has been relegated to a TV movie! - but Netflix just pumps masses of material into the giant menu void and occasional gems float to the surface... what is the future for this model I wonder?

Article Comment – Using Non-Actors to Push Reality Boundaries

"Aren't we all actors anyway?" Well, no.

It seems the subject of the essay is more about freedom from the confines of a script, than the need for "non actors". What you need is good actors. And good direction. And a good idea.

Unless you only want to make the kind of pseudo-documentary work which would work using the methods described here.

Article Comment – Huge Price Drops on Atomos 4K Recorders: Shogun Now $1,500 & Ninja Assassin Only $1K

The article states "The only real difference between the two is the Ninja Assassin is HDMI only, while the Shogun has 6G-SDI in addition to HDMI". Is that true that it's the "only real difference"? Are there differences in some of the recording options too?

There is also the benefit of continuous recording on an external recorder, vs the 29min limit on internal recording. I'm assuming that limit is still in place even on the A7sII...?

Article Comment – How Shutter Speeds & Frame Rates Can Be Used to Change the Look & Feel of Your Film

I think you'd want to lower the shutter speed, say to 1/30, and drop the ISO. But any movement will get that blurring effect

yes I've found that wave/strobe issue with LED lamps as well - not to mention the difficulty of colour balancing for them...
