Best guess is that they re-engineered the s5/i's with a larger image circle and that caused a stop loss in light. More cost effective for them probably that redesigning a lens set ground up again. Maybe, who knows?
He's often said that he doesn't care about the awards and for him it's just about bringing a story to life visually. Very much respect for that and I think because of that mentally he's lost for mostly political reasons, but he's gotten several top ASC awards and really that means even more than an Oscar.
