Matt Quinn
Cameraman, Director, Producer... Business owner/manager and
40+ years in Educational, Broadcast and Corporate TV; I'm a properly trained, legitimately qualified broadcast professional and experienced business owner/manager. My primary training is in news and I remain an active Researcher/Producer/Director for news features and documentary, with a particular interest in investigating malfeasance and corruption in public service and corporations.
I also happen to be a former college Lecturer in TV/Multimedia, with over a dozen years experience 'at the chalk face' - and have been 'online' since the mid 80s, using my training in AV/Electronics to build and run Edit Suites (and the associated multimedia and web content) since the early 90s.
With that level of experience, there's no reason why I should suffer fools - and I don't!
"Do you seriously not know who Chris Rock is? He's one of the most successful stand-ups of all time. " - Perhaps in your world he is. Curiously enough, you don't fall off the edge of the world if you keep sailing east past the big metal lady with the ice-cream cone... The fact he's 'big in America' cuts no ice here - he's just another bland Septic with a huge ego.
"The Academy does not condone violence of any form." - Really? What about the verbal violence casually meted out to an unwell and otherwise defenceless woman by 'some guy' looking to score shoddy laughs? - That score is now settled, now jog on!
Honestly? Some no-mark American 'comedian' (I had to Google this guy) takes a cheap rip at an unwell woman... did you see her face? So maybe her husband 'shouldn't' have lamped the waster; but frankly this guy got the verbal-violence he meted out right back at him in a form he might understand.
As for Will? - I'm sorry you and your family were embarrassed in this way Mr Smith. You didn't do the right thing, but I like to think I'd have the courage to do the same thing if somebody had a pop at my Mrs like that. - My respects, Sir.
...Presumably you mean one of the old Sony CV Portapaks? Or the National/Panasonic EIAJ equivalent? These were just coming on to the 'scrap' market in 1979 when I started in the industry - straight out of school! :-) So I remember getting to play with them.
I agree it's the best way to go about it; providing of course you have the technical skills to power and drive the camera... Some of these things required separate line and field drive from an SPG etc. and could be quite challenging to get to work with anything other than their native recorder.
- But certainly, convincingly emulating the artefacts of an old vidicon tube... the lag and flare together with the odd gamma; that would be a tough call using any modern system. - Something similar would be true of emulating the old single-tube colour cameras with the various 'stripe filter' and other systems of getting colour off what was essentially a black and white tube.
I must admit I'm quite pleased to see this old 'tradition' pop up again.
It's quite amusing to see this roll around again. - 20 years ago people were clawing for super-8 cameras, tubed (as opposed to chip-based) cameras and even using old formats such as U-Matic (3/4") for the aesthetic they gave...
'Field dropping' via an MX-50 vision mixer to mimic the lower temporal resolution of film was a thing... weird DOF adapters were another. 'Digital' effects provided by NLE programs of the day ...etc. etc. etc. etc. - It was a fair point then, and remains one now; 'If you’re trying to emulate the past, why not shoot with the past? ' - Assuming you can still find working examples of the technology in question and stock to run in it.
'He had his own successful TV show "Everybody Hates Chris"' - I wonder why? ...You do realise that most of the world isn't American, don't you?
